Some online loan apps in Nigeria offer small starter loans with only your NIN and phone number, but most ask for your BVN before they raise your limit, and licensed lenders like Renmoney need it to verify you and check your credit history. Borrowing from apps that skip the BVN often means higher costs, low limits and a greater risk of dealing with an unregulated lender.

There are many reasons you might be searching for an online loan app without BVN in Nigeria. You may have forgotten your BVN, your details may not match across your bank and ID records, or you may simply be worried about handing sensitive information to a loan app after hearing stories of harassment and leaked contacts.

Those concerns are fair, and you deserve a straight answer. In this guide, we explain what you can really borrow without a BVN, the risks that come with it, why credible lenders ask for it, and how to find or recover your BVN quickly so that you can borrow safely.

Can I get an online loan without a BVN in Nigeria?

You can sometimes get a small starter loan with only your National Identification Number (NIN) and phone number, but the amounts are usually low, and most lenders will ask for your BVN before they offer more.

This follows the way Nigerian accounts are set up. Under the CBN's December 2023 rules, a Tier 1 account or wallet can be opened with either a BVN or a NIN, while Tier 2 and Tier 3 accounts need both. Tier 1 accounts carry tight limits, with a maximum daily transaction of ₦50,000 and a maximum balance of ₦300,000, so a lender relying on NIN alone is working within a small box.

The CBN has also required a BVN before drawdown on new bank loans since November 2014.

The risks of borrowing without a BVN

The main risks are a higher cost of borrowing, limits that stay small, and a greater chance that you are dealing with a lender that is not properly regulated.

You may pay more in interest and fees

A lender that cannot see your credit history has no way of knowing whether you have repaid loans well in the past, so it prices every borrower as a higher risk. In practice, that often shows up as higher interest, extra fees and very short repayment windows, which means you pay more for a smaller amount of money.

Your limit may struggle to grow

When a lender is not tying your loan to your BVN, it is harder for your good repayment record to follow you and count towards your credit profile. You could repay on time for months and still find yourself stuck with small amounts, while borrowers with a BVN-backed history move on to bigger loans and better rates.

You may be dealing with an unregulated lender

Licensed lenders are required to know who they are lending to, so an app that skips basic identity checks is a warning sign. Unregulated apps are also the ones most often linked to abusive recovery, which is why the FCCPC's lending rules now prohibit apps from accessing your contact list, pictures and transactions.

If a loan app asks for access to your contacts or gallery instead of your BVN, it's best to walk away.

Why credible lenders ask for your BVN

Credible lenders use your BVN to confirm that you are who you say you are and to check your credit history, both of which protect you as much as they protect the lender.

Your BVN links to your fingerprints and photograph, so it is very difficult for someone else to take a loan in your name. It is also a Know Your Customer (KYC) requirement for financial institutions, and the CBN's consumer protection guidelines direct lenders to obtain a borrower's credit history before advancing credit.

At Renmoney, we use your BVN to verify your identity and run a credit bureau check, which helps us offer you an amount and repayment plan that works for you.

It is also worth knowing that your BVN on its own cannot be used to withdraw money from your account. What matters is that you only share it with licensed lenders and never share your PIN, password or OTP with anyone.

What if I don't have a BVN or can't remember it?

If you have forgotten your BVN, you can recover it in seconds, and if you have never had one, enrolment is free at any bank branch.

To check a forgotten BVN, dial *565*0# from the phone number linked to your BVN, and it will appear on your screen for a small network charge of about ₦20. You can also find it in your bank's app or by asking your bank. If the details on your BVN do not match your profile, your bank can help you correct them. If you don't have a BVN yet, visit a bank branch with a valid ID to enrol for free, keeping in mind that from 1 May 2026, only people aged 18 and above can enrol.
